Home is where we feel safe, secure and connected. It is where relationships grow, memories are made, and we develop a sense of belonging and purpose.
An Individualised Living Arrangement is about creating a home and life built around a person with disability with opportunity to live, grow and thrive.
Too often, people with disability are denied the freedom to choose where they live, who they live with, and who provides support.
An Individualised Living Arrangement is different. It puts the person at the centre, supporting choice and control to create a home that reflects who a person is, where life feels safe, and is connected to neighbourhood and community.
In this workshop you will hear about individualised living arrangements as alternative to group home and SIL houses.
You'll hear directly from people with disability and families who are at different points in the journey. From building a vision and planning for the future, to creating and thriving in their own home. You'll hear honest insights, practical ideas and lessons learned along the way.
People with disability, their families, professionals and advocates
Karen Swchartz
Karen’s son Adam is a “30 something”, who has been living in his own home for 10 years. Key to Adam moving out was his circle of support Karen says “our goal is for Adam to live as independent a life as possible in a home just like that of his sisters and peers”.
Nina and Elise Magrath
Nina is a 19-year-old artist who is planning her move out of home. She lives with her family in a regional town but is contemplating a move to a nearby city to build on her connections and work opportunities in the art scene. With a strong vision for her future, Nina, her family and friends are planning how to make it happen, so Nina can live and thrive in her own home. Nina and her mum, Elise, will share their thinking, planning and practical actions to build the future Nina wants for herself.
Sam Stubbs and Debra Jefferis
Sam is in his 20s and is an AFL player and athlete. With the help of his parents and circle, Sam moved into his own home with supportive housemates 3 years ago.
