bec HThe Facilitator

Bec is the proud mother of two teenage children. After the birth of her son who has an autism diagnosis, she personally experienced the daily barriers that children with disability and their parents face within mainstream society.

Bec has recently been supporting her 15 year old son to gain work experience. She also has years of experience supporting other families to ensure that all students with disability gain suitable and individualised work experience/s.

What’s a Peer Network?

A Peer is someone with similar experience to you. A Peer Network is a connected group of peers.

Our peer network is a group of both family members of people with disability and people with disability who are working towards a common vision; sharing their questions, ideas and experiences with one another along the way. A peer network is not a seminar. It’s a group that works when everyone contributes. The facilitator is there to help the group stay on track, not to provide all the answers.

Why join this Peer Network?

  • A good first experience of work helps young people see possibilities in life after school.
  • Work experience helps you discover new interests and skills. It also invites employers to be more inclusive.
  • Employment is a typical post-school life experience.
  • Employment provides income and valued social roles, enabling the person with disability to have more of the life they want, not just to get what they need.

What is Inclusion?

Inclusion is being known as a multi-faceted person – more than “the person with a disability”. It means holding socially valued roles that provide a sense of purpose and a place of belonging in the community with meaningful and reciprocal relationships, being trusted and valued and having access to good formal and informal supports.

Whether you're a family member or a person with disability, just starting to consider employment opportunities and aren’t sure where to start, join us to discuss and share work experience approaches with other families.
