We all deserve a Good Life – with family, friends, connection to the wider community, a sense of belonging and importantly a place to call home.
The Vision of this Peer Network is to support high expectations that all people with disability can live in their own home, in an arrangement that is uniquely tailored to them.
Home is more than a roof over our head. Home is a place to call our own, a place for privacy and safety, for belonging and fun, a base to explore our neighbourhoods and communities.
However, for many adults with disability to live in their own home will require more intentional planning than it does for others.
This peer network will provide the basis for strategies and focus on the planning we need to do to develop a truly individualised living arrangement, where a person with disability thrives living in their own home.
This is a monthly meeting on Mondays 12-1:30pm (Sydney NSW Time)
The Network is not a seminar, but rather a group that works when everyone contributes. We need to hear from you - your ideas, your experiences and your questions – and a facilitator is there to help the group stay on track, and guide the conversation.
By sharing together, we will all learn together.
The facilitator is Annette O’Sullivan, who has been associated with Family Advocacy for over 25 years. Annette has an ongoing commitment to the empowerment and inclusion of all people with disability. The facilitator is Annette O’Sullivan, who has been associated with Family Advocacy for over 25 years. Her family’s vision for her son Nathan has provided a clear understanding of how to assist him to have a meaningful and valuable life included in the community. Nathan has been living in his own home for 8 years.
This network is for both family members of adults with disability and people with disability who are working towards living in their own home. With a focus on planning for individualised living this peer network is an opportunity to share strategies. ideas, and experiences as well as ask questions to help us achieve our goals.
An individualised living arrangement is where a person with disability lives in their home with a good sense of belonging, freedom, contribution, safety and privacy. Where they choose who they live with, if anyone. The person is included in their community and neighbourhood with valued roles and meaningful relationships with family, friends, neighbours and community members.
Individualised living is a viable alternative to group homes, shared supported accommodation and SIL house and achieves far better outcomes for the person with disability.
